Strike - Slip Earthquakes on Quasi - Vertical Transcurrent Faults : Inferences for General Scaling Relations

چکیده

_Abstract., The recent occurrence of several large su'ike-slip earthquakes provides the opportunity to review and complement available data on the scaling of seismic moment (Mo) with length of rupture (L) for large earthquakes, depending on their tectonic setting and mechanism. For strikeslip earthquakes onquasi-vertical transcurrent faults, the Mo versus L relation has a significant change of slope around Mo~(0.6-0.8)'1020 N-m, and for larger earthquakes, Mo scales linearly with L. This is compatible with models where slip is controlled by the width of the fault. Also, it appears to be easier to categorize large earthquakes by their mechanism (strike-slip on vertical transcurrent fault, versus pure thrust/normal) than their tectonic setting (interplate/intraplate).

On moment-length scaling of large strike slip earthquakes and the strength of faults

[1] Several large strike slip earthquakes have occurred in various tectonic settings in the past 5 years, adding well documented data to the global collection of moment and length estimates for such earthquakes. Based on this augmented dataset, we reexamine the controversial issue of scaling of seismic moment with length of rupture. We find that the global dataset of large strike-slip earthquak...

Circum - Pacific Faulting in the Philippines - Taiwan Region

Conflicting views of circum-Pacific tectonics have focused on the PhilippinesTaiwan region, where there has been neither convincing documentation nor general agreement on the importance of transcurrent (strike-slip) faulting or the possible sense of regional horizontal displacement. Structural and physiographic features of the 1200-km-long Philippine fault zone are fully as spectacular as those...

Role of seismogenic depth and background stress on physical 1 limits of earthquake rupture across fault step - overs

11 Earthquakes can rupture geometrically complex fault systems by breaching fault step-overs. 12 Quantifying the likelihood of rupture jump across step-overs is important to evaluate earth13 quake hazard and to understand the interactions between dynamic rupture and fault growth 14 processes. Here we investigate the role of seismogenic depth and background stress on phys15 ical limits of earthq...

The Dynamics of Strike-Slip Step-Overs with Linking Dip-Slip Faults

Fault step-overs with linking dip-slip faults are common features on long strike-slip fault systems worldwide. It has been noted by various researchers that under some circumstances, earthquakes can jump across fault step-overs to cascade into large events, while under other circumstances rupture is arrested at stepovers. There is also evidence that fault step-overs may be preferential location...

Moment tensor and stress inversion for an active fault system in west part of Lut-Block, Iran

Iran is one of the most tectonically active regions on the Alpine-Himalayan earthquake belt. Eastern Iran, nowadays, is one of the most active regions of the country. The occurrence of several destructive earthquakes during the past 50 years provides the evidence for the seismic activity in this region. The earthquakes are mostly concentrated around the Lut-block. There are strike-slip fault sy...
